Evaluation Question One
In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I'm going start by looking at conventions of my genre, INDIE ROCK
Jake Bugg - Two Fingers
This shows conventions of:
Showing a performance aspect
Showing some narrative
Mise-en-scene - props and location shows a 'reto' look such as the old sofa
Lyrical link "skin up a fat one" whilst smoking
Smoking
Smoking
The Killers - Mr Brightside
This shows conventions of:
Showing a performance aspect
Showing some narrativeMise-en-scene - costume and makeup shows a distinctive style, that you could define retro
RETRO DEFINITION: imitative of a style or fashion from the recent past
Lyrical link "now they're going to bed and my stomach is sick" whilst we see a man and a woman getting up and walking off and the singers face has a look of disgust
Reference to smoking
Elbow - Grounds For Divorce
This shows conventions of:
Showing a performance aspect
Showing little narrative
Mise-en-scene - locations shows a retro style
Editing which has the same timing as the beat
Now I'm going to look at conventions of my artist, ALT-J
Breezblockers
Matilda
Something Good
These all show similar forms such as:
Slow motion
No performance (going against other indie rock music video conventions)
Slow paced editing
I'm also going to look at Alt-J's CD cover and advertisement...
All of these images came up when i searched 'Alt-J CD' on Google, however the last image is the official CD cover. The image is abstract, and a couple of them have a triangle on making a lyrical link to one of the songs on the album, Tesselate.
Poster of Alt-J
This is a poster of Alt-J where they have used their bodies to create a shape, this links in to what I have done in my music video and what is on the inside of my digipack.
The posed picture of themselves is conventional of the indie rock genre...
Arctic Monkeys, Bombay Bicycle Club and Vampire Weekend
Sasquatch Music Festival Poster
This poster is quite abstract, again using the shape of a triangle, like on their CD covers, which has a lyrical link.

Making my Magazine Advert
I took screenshots from Final Cut where I made my video, cropped the screenshot images to fit the poster and added text. I used the same font and colours for the poster as I did for my digipak as it makes my whole product tie in nicely.
I like this as the colour of the image links in nicely with the text. The effect on the image creates horizontal lines which accommodates the text very nicely. It shows the audience that the song is to do about love, because of the loveheart. However the loveheart is distorted due to the effect, which the audience could read more into, and get the message that the song is about conflicting love which I have represented in my video.
I like the effect I've added to this image as it's a bit different and it's as if the people are burning away which links to the love triangle I have represented in my music video.
I'm not to keen on this as the text doesn't look very good. I think the image looks much better on my digipak as you can see more of the landscape whereas here, it is cut off so you can't understand the full perspective.
